The Adoption Process

We are happy to hear that you are interested in one of our cats, but we do not adopt out cats on a first come first serve basis. Matching cat to owner is sometimes a time consuming process, but is an important part in placing a cat in the right forever home. Your patience during this process is appreciated.

Step 1:

Fill out the Adoption Application. We understand this application is lengthy and asks for quite a lot of information, but everything on it helps us determine your ability to provide the perfect home and which cat will probably work best with you. We certainly don't want to place a cat that is terrified of dogs in a house with three goldens, for example. Being thorough helps keep the incidents of incompatible matches to a minimum.

We do check all references and ask for the permission to speak to your vet. Please provide accurate and truthful information to make the application process faster and more pleasant for all involved.

Step 2:

Meet our cats. Check the Available Cats page to see who is now looking for a home. We sometimes have cats not yet listed because they await shots, or a vet checkup or other things before they can be released. However, having a home lined up and ready for the moment they can leave is certainly a great thing. To find out about who is up and coming, contact our Adoptions Coordinator or check the Coming Soon page.

Step 3:

Contact the foster parent for the cat you are interested in. This person knows the cat best and will be able to tell you more about it than anyone else. This is also the person you need to schedule the meeting with when you decide on a cat you want to meet in person.

Step 4:

Once you are approved, and have found the perfect cat there are yet more forms to fill out. These are not as labor-intensive as the adoption application but they are just as important. Amongst these forms is a contract stating the following:

  • The cat will never be declawed or have a tendenectomy (the exception is if the cat was already declawed when it entered rescue).
  • All necessary and reasonable efforts and expenses will be provided to keep the cat in healthy condition.
  • The cat will live in an indoor only home with adequate food and water supplied.
  • In the event you cannot keep the cat any longer it will be returned to DFPR

The foster parent will provide you with all the necessary paperwork and any available health records for the cat. If the cat is microchipped, you will be provided with the registration information.

Step 5:

The adoption fee must be paid prior to bringing your new cat home. In most cases this fee is $175, but may be $250 for some exceptional cats or kittens.
